Technology has allowed greater access to knowledge over the past decades, including fast translations from one language to another. Machine translation (MT) systems such as Google Translate have made language more accessible quickly and conveniently, but how reliable are these translations? The progress machine translation has made over the years is impressive, but it is still far from an equal substitute for human translation.

A recent research paper published by the Cornell University has suggested human paraphrased reference translations can be used to improve machine translation systems. By using human paraphrases with machine translations, this hopes to achieve a more natural sounding translation.

The researchers used professional linguists to paraphrase references as much as possible, whilst the second group of linguists rated the translations, both paraphrased and not. The linguists preferred the paraphrased translations, suggesting that the direct, simplistic translations that MT systems produce are not up to standard. So, despite the progress machine translations have made, they are yet to replace the human touch.

Google Translate Vs Human Translation

There’s no denying the convenience that Google Translate brings, especially if you’re on holiday and need a quick translation to find direction or order some food, Google provides a standard phrase you can use. However, when it comes to needing reliable and accurate translations, whether it be for your website, product or advertisement campaign, which is the right service to choose? Below we explore the factors in Google Translate Vs Human Translation.

Google Translate

Advantages:

  • It’s free, convenient, and easily accessible. No matter where you are, if you have internet, you have access to quick translations.

  • It’s super quick. If you’re in a situation where you need to speak or write something in a different language in a timely manner, Google Translate takes no time at all.

 Disadvantages:

  • There are many mistakes. Without context, the translation can often be misguided and inaccurate. Plus, it lacks reliability when it comes to sentence structure and grammar.

  • It uses word-for-word translations. Some pairs of languages will not have exact word matches available or they use a different sentence structure, meaning Google Translate accuracy is lacking.

Human Translation

Advantages:

  • Human translations take into account the context of your phrase, and will easily identify any colloquiums, idioms, and more.

  • Human translation services will ensure the correct grammar and sentence structure according to each language.

  • If there is not a word-for-word translation available between two languages, a human translator will find an understandable replacement.

  • Consistency across language pairs. Professional human translation services will be well equipped to ensure your message is delivered the same intent, no matter which language pairs you choose to translate.

Disadvantages:

  • Although you will be able to find translation services that will deliver the translations quickly and efficiently, it’s not instant like that of Google Translate.

The Verdict

Human translation and Google Translate are both great for different moments. If you’re looking for a quick fix, whether you’re looking at a menu abroad or you’re just trying to ‘get the gist’ of something, then it’s a quick and easy solution. However, it is best to not rely on Google Translate accuracy. The complexities and nuances of languages are ever-changing, something a fixed machine cannot comprehend to a full extent. If you’re hoping for precision and reliability, maybe you’re sending a letter, or you’re posting something on your website, then using human translation is for you.
